Basic Math Skills Are Enough to Succeed in Real Estate Investing

The real estate industry has created an unnecessary mystique around property investing that may be keeping potential investors on the sidelines, according to Lauren Aumond, host of the Adulting Is Easy podcast and experienced property investor.
The Simplicity Behind the Complexity
“Real estate at its core, especially when we’re talking about deal analysis, is pretty simple. I mean, it’s adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing. I mean, we’re not doing calculus here,” Aumond says, challenging the common perception that real estate investing requires advanced financial knowledge.
Drawing from her experience interviewing numerous real estate professionals, Aumond argues that success in real estate often has more to do with persistence than sophisticated analysis. “Over time, the more I talk to these people from all these different backgrounds, the more I realize real estate at its core is pretty simple,” she observes.
Breaking Down the Barriers
According to Aumond, who began investing in her early 20s, the biggest obstacles to real estate success are often psychological rather than technical. She points to her own initial resistance to the idea that “if I can do it, anybody can do it,” admitting that her academic background led her to overestimate the complexity of real estate investing.
“Growing up, I was like very studious, and always was like gifted or whatever. And so I sort of thought like, not everything I can do, everybody else can do,” Aumond says, reflecting on her earlier mindset. “Which is just super egotistical.”
The Real Requirements for Success
Through her podcast interviews and personal experience, Aumond has identified that successful real estate investors share common traits that have little to do with advanced education or complex financial knowledge. Instead, she points to persistence and adaptability as key success factors.
“Everybody has a setback,” Aumond notes, sharing her own early challenge with a squatter in her first duplex. “Real estate investors, they do not give up.”
Solutions and Path Forward
Through her platform, Aumond works to demystify real estate investing while maintaining realistic expectations about the challenges involved. She advocates for a balanced approach that acknowledges both the fundamental simplicity of real estate mathematics and the importance of persistence through inevitable setbacks.
The growing audience for her straightforward, demystifying approach suggests there’s significant demand for content that strips away the unnecessary complexity from real estate investing while still addressing its real challenges.
