City Leader Credits Dearborn’s Hospitality Strength as Coffee Shop Grows Into 30+ National Franchises

A remarkable trend is emerging in Dearborn, Michigan, where local coffee shops are rapidly expanding into national franchise operations, according to Angela Fortino, Deputy Director of Economic Development at the City of Dearborn.
“We are self-proclaimed the coffee capital. We have over 35 unique coffee roasting and cafe businesses,” Fortino says, highlighting how one local success story has already opened more than 30 franchise locations nationally, with another 50 planned.
The International Connection
What sets Dearborn’s coffee scene apart is its direct connection to international sourcing. “Some of them are because of family ties, able to source beans straight from the Middle East,” Fortino explains. These direct relationships with suppliers in places like Yemen create unique market advantages for local operators.
From Local Shop to National Brand
The city’s most notable success launched in 2021 and has experienced explosive growth. “For him, it’s he has the whole life cycle of the business figured out,” Fortino says of one entrepreneur who has rapidly scaled to 30 locations with 50 more in development.
Beyond Coffee
The franchise success extends beyond coffee shops. “We have restaurants that have done something similar, where they’re just able to expand, they figure out their business model and they want to franchise,” Fortino notes.
Market Opportunities
For real estate investors and brokers, this rapid expansion creates unique opportunities. “Finding locations nationally, as we all know, is difficult,” Fortino says. “That’s kind of our under the radar situation where people can not only look at what investments they can make into the city and get on deals, but also exporting our talent.”
Cultural Celebration
The city has embraced its emerging identity as a coffee destination, launching an annual Coffee Week celebration featuring demonstrations of roasting and grinding techniques, along with cultural programming at the Arab American National Museum exploring coffee’s historical significance.
